What formats and qualities can I download?

Video up to 4K (2160p) and audio as MP3 at 192 kbps. Resolutions up to 1080p come as .mp4 (H.264); 1440p and 2160p come as .mkv (VP9/AV1).

Why are 4K videos saved as MKV instead of MP4?

YouTube only offers VP9/AV1 above 1080p, which Apple's QuickTime and Preview can't decode (you'd see a black screen). To keep the full original quality without a slow re-encode, those are saved as .mkv — just open them in VLC or Chrome.

Will downloading re-encode or shrink my video?

No. Videos are delivered in their original stream with no re-encoding, so there's no quality loss.
